Erase last 100 pages or so! NOW!

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!

That is NOT how it ends! Not even remotely how it ends!

*fumes*

(I'm speaking of Fool's Fate right now, by the way.)

It's just . . . ARGH! *bashes book against wall repeatedly*

Someone ([insanejournal.com profile] cheloya!) tell me a different ending. Don't need to write it, just tell me a different ending. Please. Or I shall go mad, and have this hideous FALSE WRONG BAD BAD ending stuck in my head forever.

*wail of fury and outrage*

I. I have this AU living forever in my head.

Where one day the children discover a stranger at the gate, who is quite uncertain about whether he wants to come in or keep going. Fitz is at the castle at this point, but Molly invites him to wait, and he does. And because he's Beloved, the children are getting to be won over even before Fitz gets back.

Molly sort of half-knows him, and when Fitz does get back it's obvious how close they are. It takes some getting used to, but it's plain to Molly how much they care for each other, and Fitz is happier and more affectionate even to her when Beloved is around.

And because Molly and the kids have spent a fair few days asking questions, she knows part of his history and culture. She thinks it strange, but times are changing in the Duchies - Dutiful and Elliania are seeing to that.

And eventually they all get over themselves and try to make it work and they live more or less happily ever after and Fitz is Molly because Beloved gives his name to HER as a show of faith.

So There.

[identity profile] feather_qwill.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
NO. Seriously, STILL SO WRONG. The ONLY thing that I like about the ending is the reunion with Patience. EVERYTHING ELSE IS BAD.

Something that ends Fitz & Fool wandering off on an adventure somewhere. Maybe to see Bingtown or something. Fitz looks in on Molly, sees they've both changed too much and he loves a memory, not her now? (I cannot convey the depths of the WRONGNESS of Fitz & Molly getting back together. It goes beyond shipping Fitz/Fool. HUGE STEP BACKWARDS, YO!) Fool never says any of his stupid speech. Or Fitz just bulls him over. Maybe the Fool is called Keppet on the journey? (And Fitz Beloved, of course.) Maybe even tweak an earlier detail a bit, and have Burrich pull through once they're away from the island?

Surely, my nice uke can give me such a scenario?

[identity profile] cheloya.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Alas, your uke has spent many a year tearing her hair re. the copout nature of Fitz's feelings for Molly being stored in a dragon for the entirety of his narration, and has come to the conclusion that, okay, maybe Fitz's love for Molly is as epic as he thinks it is, even though it has been impossible for us to see this because of aforementioned storage inside dragon.

I had much the same reaction you're having, to begin with, and I really think Fitz should have taken time out before going back to Molly with all the maturity of the love he had for her at, what, twenty-two. But the above scenario in the back of my head is honestly the best parallel universe I can make without totally bulldozing the author.

Even though her every opinion on fandom rubs me precisely the wrong way every time.

Honestly, the only thing I can ever say when it comes down to it is: FUCKING SKILL PILLAR. FUCKING, FUCKING SKILL PILLAR. WHYYYY.

[identity profile] feather_qwill.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but I mean that's precisely the point - it's Fitz's feeling for Molly from 15 years ago. That Fitz - and more importantly, that Molly - just doesn't exist anymore. Even if you could claim that Fitz 'reverted' to an earlier version of himself, Molly certainly hasn't. I can't honestly believe that it would in any way work out.

And the Tawny Man trilogy was all leading to Fitz & Fool Forever! until the last minute cop-out. It's like RH suddenly had an attack of last-minute rampant homophobia and wanted to end the books in a way that said "OH HAH HAH! No, it isn't a GAY love, honest - see Fitz go back to his girlfriend and Fool go off on his own? And Fool was never actually interested in Fitz sexually. See, I said so! REALLY NO GAY HERE AT ALL."

Even though her every opinion on fandom rubs me precisely the wrong way every time.
I get seriously peeved when authors get uppity about fanfic.

[identity profile] alleyne.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Well. OK. I hate Fitz/Molly just as much as the next person, but I sort of got that they ended up together. It was inevitable. It made me angry, but it was, in a way, the only possible ending for Fitz (I feel the same way about the end of King's Dark Tower). And I truly believe that Fitz/Fool would always be this awkward "is this sexual or not?" deal. Which is totally okay with me, by the way; I loved that about them.

I just. Can't. Handle. Fool going away. Forever. It's just unbelievable. They are meant to be together, even if Fitz has to be with his stupid Molly. Fool is meant to put Fitz into horrible situations that they then struggle out of together, all in the name of changing history and saving dragons. Fool isn't meant to be Not There.

BUT HEY. CONSOLE YOURSELF WITH THIS: FOOL COULD STILL BE DEAD. That's how I try to help myself sleep at night XD

[identity profile] cheloya.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
fffffffff, I know.

But even THAT felt something like a copout. MOSTLY BECAUSE I SPENT TWO HOURS HOWLING WITH GRIEF AND THEN OH BY THE WAY HE'S NOT DEAD REALLY. THANKS FOR THAT, HOBB; THAT REALLY MADE ME LOOK SANE, THAT DID.

[identity profile] alleyne.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so used to losing my favourites that it has never felt like a copout XD Because yes, there is the inconsolable grief sobbing, and then there is the HOLY SHIT HE'S ALIVE :D sobbing. No matter how many times I read these books, that will never change for me lol

[identity profile] feather_qwill.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I was all "He isn't forever-dead. It's only halfway through the book. He isn't forever-dead. *SOB!* HE ISN'T FOREVER-DEAD, RIGHT?"

[identity profile] feather_qwill.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a copout! *hugs Fool*

I was practically crying when Fitz found the tattoo skin and then Fool in the waste area and Thick saying "that's dirt" and just the absolute horribleness of the way he died it was so fucking horrible and I was T______T

[identity profile] feather_qwill.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I could MAYBE have handled it if the Fool was there too - even though I have huge, not-even-shippy problems with Fitz ending up with Molly - but exactly! The Fool can't just go off forever! Jinni (or whatev.) said that he would come and go but be with Fitz his whole life! FAIL! FAIL! FAIL!

And I truly believe that Fitz/Fool would always be this awkward "is this sexual or not?" deal.
I am not arguing. I mean, I would have squeed like a little fangirl if they had, but the Ultimate Oneness of Fitz & the Fool was way awesome and probably better. IF IT HAD BEEN KEPT! *cry*

[identity profile] alleyne.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Fool left Fitz during Liveship Traders, and then came back. Maybe there is still work to be done. We'll have to see what comes of the Rain Wilds books, I guess. I hope. If that was truly the end of the Fool/Fitz story arc I don't think I could ever forgive Hobb :(

How is it possible to love and hate an author so much lol. I try to stay out of the fandom aspect because, like you and Rave, it makes me So Damn Angry.

[identity profile] feather_qwill.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, fandom is almost the whole point of a new series, and when an author denies me that I get extremely GRRRR!faced and lose respect for them. ESPECIALLY if they end wrongishly. There are very few fandoms that I am both A) content to not be fannish about and B) actually like enough to want to reread/rewatch.

It's a loop! The more I like something, the more I want to be fannish -> the more fannish I am, the more I like it and want to reread it.

[identity profile] cheloya.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
And she is REALLY uppity about fanfic.

So I've basically stopped respecting her as a person, even though I love her world into little tiny pieces of ground up awesome that you put on the top of cakes.

And yes, I agree that there's no way it can turn out well. But.

...god, seme-sama, don't make me angry at it all over again. I understand what she's saying about how love doesn't have to be sexual; I really do understand Fool's I-love-you-the-way-love-entails-pointed-look and I actually appreciate the idea that not every close friendship has to end in sex.

But it's not resolved and it never will be, because I don't think she could work out how to resolve it, which is what makes it feel like a copout. It's like Monette and her, "Well, I have no idea why Gideon and Thadeus hated each other so much." It's just like... what the hell do you mean, 'you don't know'? How dare you so blatantly leave something so huge unresolved? That's the frustrating, and sadly realistic, part.

I still think Fitz would need some serious beating about the head to come to terms with How They Do It In Whereverland because, well, maturity has never been his strong point. But I do think Fitz knows, quietly, who his great love has been, and I'm pretty damn sure it wasn't Molly.

[identity profile] feather_qwill.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't expecting it to end in sex; I didn't even really WANT it to end in sex - I just think that there's a difference between "Fitz and the Fool never have sex" and "Fool not having ever desired Fitz"

...god, seme-sama, don't make me angry at it all over again.
ALL YOUR FAULT. Who told me to read it? YOU DID. Who failed to warn me not to read the ending? YOU DID. Who made me beat a book against my pillow in rage? YOU DID. Deal with the consequences. :(

[identity profile] alleyne.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I just think that there's a difference between "Fitz and the Fool never have sex" and "Fool not having ever desired Fitz"

Agreed!

[identity profile] cheloya.insanejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
...did she actually write that into the book or did I just ignore it completely? If I implied that was true at any point, I did not intend to. o.0 If she did, she's kind of bugfuck, just sayin'.

Also: but. ;_; Their love is so true. Their love is possibly the truest I have ever seen in a story anywhere ever. Aren't you at least glad to have KNOWN THEM? ;_;

Book Two of Tawny Man, around page 405:

Fitz: I don't want to have sex with you! EVER!

Fool: I KNEW THAT! You don't have to shove it in my face! Now I have to remember you saying that forever! Asshole!

(And then, possibly the most heartbreaking line ever, though not part of my argument, "I thought the flowers were from you, Fitz." Jesus Christ. My heart broke. All this time, every morning when Fitz brought in a flower with breakfast, the Fool has been thinking they were from him. And now he realizes they weren't. Ouch.)

I think my favourite character in GF is actually Jek.

Because she has the balls to tell Fitz he's being an unreasonable asshole.

I love her longtime. <3 <3 <3

[identity profile] cheloya.insanejournal.com 2009-01-25 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Also: no, I know FITZ said that but it sounded like you meant FOOL never wanted to have sex with Fitz and I was all, "Uhhh, which version of the book were YOU reading...?"

[identity profile] feather_qwill.insanejournal.com 2009-01-25 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I was saying that that conversation was *proof* Fool wants sex with Fitz, but in the end of Fool's Fate, RH turns it around and basically says that Fool "TOTALLY DIDN'T WANT SEX, YO - THAT WOULD BE LIKE SCREWING NIGHTEYES!!!111" which is like, no. Sorry. Too late. No take-backs.

I'm hoping Hobb will return to it as she'd always intended to... http://robin-hobb.livejournal.com/2081.html

Oh, Fool...
