That is NOT how it ends! Not even remotely how it ends!
*fumes*
(I'm speaking of Fool's Fate right now, by the way.)
It's just . . . ARGH! *bashes book against wall repeatedly*
Someone (
cheloya!) tell me a different ending. Don't need to write it, just tell me a different ending. Please. Or I shall go mad, and have this hideous FALSE WRONG BAD BAD ending stuck in my head forever.
*wail of fury and outrage*

Where one day the children discover a stranger at the gate, who is quite uncertain about whether he wants to come in or keep going. Fitz is at the castle at this point, but Molly invites him to wait, and he does. And because he's Beloved, the children are getting to be won over even before Fitz gets back.
Molly sort of half-knows him, and when Fitz does get back it's obvious how close they are. It takes some getting used to, but it's plain to Molly how much they care for each other, and Fitz is happier and more affectionate even to her when Beloved is around.
And because Molly and the kids have spent a fair few days asking questions, she knows part of his history and culture. She thinks it strange, but times are changing in the Duchies - Dutiful and Elliania are seeing to that.
And eventually they all get over themselves and try to make it work and they live more or less happily ever after and Fitz is Molly because Beloved gives his name to HER as a show of faith.
So There.
