Buried in the Sand [Ianto, Ianto/Lisa - G - Torchwood]

Phew! Still in the running for [insanejournal.com profile] writerinadrawer.

Title: Buried in the Sand
Pairing/Characters: Ianto, Ianto/Lisa
Rating: G
Words: 278
Prompt: Duran Duran song title & lyric

Summary/Notes: Pre-series AU. They're slowly going crazy.

Yesterday, they said goodbye.

--

Ianto was worried.

Lisa’s eyes were bruised black from too many nights staying late at the lab. The rumor mill had it that Doc G was retiring, and she needed a raise. When someone at the top left, the entire hierarchy shifted in response. Even the lab techs got a chance at moving up. If they worked hard enough. If they pulled enough shifts. If they let caffeine substitute for sleep.

Lisa hated coffee, but now she was throwing back gallons of it just to keep awake. Ianto found a high-end coffee maker at a rubbish sale and devoted himself with single-minded slavishness to learning how to make it just right.

His efforts made Lisa smile, and as an added perk, his office-mates’ attitudes had vastly improved. Also, it kept him occupied, which was important.

Because, hell, aliens! In London.

And no one seemed to care.

Outside of Torchwood, it was like the water had been spiked with retcon; nobody seemed to remember. Inside Torchwood, they just didn’t care.

After an experiment went wrong and two bodies - two friends - had to be catalogued and inventoried like so much space junk, Lisa screamed at Ianto and sobbed into her pillow. They were hanging by a thread, and it was going to snap.

Ianto held her tight and whispered in her ear.

--

They said goodbye and walked away. After a year, they took out a mortgage on a tiny house in the country. A cat without a tail adopted them; Ianto named it something ridiculous in Welsh and Lisa called it Sam.

When the ghosts came, they pretended not to see.

end.

Lyric: They were hanging by a thread
