Counting Crows [G - Hokuto, Seishiro/Subaru - Tokyo Babylon]
Halloween Fic #4 (Technically, I cheated on this one; it takes place during Obon, not Halloween. Meh.)
Title: Counting Crows
Fandom: Tokyo Babylon
Pairing/Characters: Hokuto, Seishiro/Subaru
Rating: G
Words: 212
Notes/Summary: For
cheloya. Post-series. This year, Subaru was alone for Obon.
One for sorrow,
Two for mirth,
Three a marriage,
Four a birth,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret, never to be told.
Once upon a time, when the world was a lot kinder, there had been an evening of ghost stories. Hokuto-chan had insisted, and Seishiro-san sided with her like he always did when there was fun to be had at Subaru’s expense. It had been an uncomfortable and strangely thrilling evening.
This year, Subaru was alone for Obon.
“Subaru!” Hokuto-chan scolded, “Honestly, why don’t you ever smile anymore?”
“. . . Fine, be that way. But you have to listen to me. I’ve come to tell you something important.”
Outside, thunder crashed and a murder of seven crows cawed in protest. The door opened with a whisper.
“What? No! Subaru, you can’t go to sleep now!”
“Hello again, Hokuto-chan. You know he can’t hear you?”
She faltered. “But . . . I have to tell him.”
“It’s too late for all that.”
“Then why are you here, Seishiro-san?”
“Ah,” he said, “Well. That.”
“Seishiro-san?”
“Goodnight, Hokuto-chan.” He left as quietly as he’d come. Subaru blinked slowly and sat up.
Hokuto’s hand made a brief, aborted motion toward her brother’s shoulder.
“Why can’t you see me, Subaru?”
end.
AN: A bit bizarre, I know.
